Certification for community health workers in Pennsylvania is regulated by the Pennsylvania Certification Board. The board sets minimum requirements that must be met in order for someone to apply as a state-certified community health worker.
These requirements are:
75 hours of training by a state-accredited provider within the last 5 years
1 year full-time or 2000 hours part-time experience as a paid or volunteer community health worker at any organization(The state does not have a list of accepted organizations or characteristics of an acceptable organization- any CHW role is acceptable). 60 or more of these hours must feature on-the-job supervision
A job description of your current CHW role, signed by you and your current supervisor.
The requirements for a CHW position to be considered are laid out in the Certified Community Health Worker Content Outline.
The Community Health Workers Association of Delaware now handles all state certification for the state of Delaware. The requirements are largely the same as in Pennsylvania, but two pathways to certification are available dependent on your prior experience as a community health worker.
The CHW CORE Training Program is an accredited training provider in Delaware, and our 75 hour training is sufficient for trainees to receive state certification along with their required work experience hours.
For those who have already earned state certification as a CHW in PA, in order to keep their certification active, they must complete 30 hours relevant to community health including 3 hours in ethics every 2 years.
CCHWs are ready to apply for recertification after they have completed and documented those 30 hours. Documentation can be in the form of training certificates or transcripts OR noting that same information in the application.
If someone is looking for trainings to help meet those hours, they may consider:
The Health Literacy Specialist training program (provided FREE through PHMC’s program) - The online, 49 hours long training covers several community health courses including 7 lessons in Ethics.
PA AHEC also offers a number of courses for continuing education - Find more information at https://www.paahec.org/chw/continuing-education.
